My speciality is Modern European Art with the main concentration being British.
I guide clients through the myriad vagaries of the art market, explaining its anomalies whilst picking out true quality. With over 30 years’ experience, I have worked through three recessions, leaving me with a deep understanding of true market value: picking artists that stand the test of time, ignoring the overhyped and never taking my clients’ capital for granted. I search out and distinguish the very best pieces that the market has to offer, advising on what to avoid as much as to what pieces to buy.
I have advised my clients and have bought them artworks by some of the greatest artists of the last 100 years: Picasso, Richter, Calder, Moore, Freud, Hepworth and Bacon. But I also relish finding the undervalued and overlooked genius, as well as young, future greats.
My appreciation of art was kick started during the postgraduate Christie’s Fine Art Course in London. It inspired a life-long love and appreciation of art both as a collector and an expert.
I spent 11 years at Bonhams auctioneers in London, becoming Head of the Modern and Contemporary Art department within four years. In 2002 I founded Nick Holmes Fine Art and within 18 months had project managed Tony Cragg’s prestigious sculptural commission for Barclay’s Bank world headquarters in London. This was soon followed by launching Holmes Adams projects which included sculptor Nic Fiddian Green’s first international show in Dublin.
I was appointed as Non-Executive Director of an international art fund in 2014. Tasked with assessing all pieces prior to purchase, I oversaw works by Gerhard Richter, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso amongst others.
I divide my time between London and my family home in North Norfolk, interspersed with visits to the major international art fairs.
In addition to advising on acquisitions and commissions, I offer a valuation service for individual art works or for entire collections. Where deemed necessary for pre-19th C artworks I call on trusted specialists in the field and work with generalist valuation companies when dealing with entire household contents. Costs entirely depend on the scale of the enterprise and range, from a half day at £400 plus VAT upwards.
Types include: Valuation for Auction, Valuation for Insurance, Taxation and Probate, Family Division, Trusts and Estates

“I sometimes think of the awful mistakes I could have made by not engaging Nick Holmes as my art advisor. Nick has developed my knowledge of art, and my eye, to a huge extent and I will always be grateful for that. He has introduced gems at auction and off market whilst also, on occasion, gently explained why certain of my ‘love at first sight’ pieces may not quite have been right for my collection. I greatly respect his integrity and the depth and breadth of his knowledge. It is a real pleasure working with him.” — Donald Ghill, Collector
“ Nick introduces me to gems —
I greatly respect his integrity, he is extremely knowledgable and professional ”
“Nick has been advising me on art purchases for a decade or more. He has been a pleasure to deal with, having very quickly assessed where my interest was likely to lie, and he has also ensured that I have been able to buy well, meaning my collection not only gives me and my family pleasure, but also represents a very sound long term investment." — Mark Tyndall, Artemis Funds
“I have worked with Nick Holmes for a number of years, and he has been instrumental in helping me build my Fine Art collection. I find Nick to be extremely knowledgeable and professional.” — James Hopkins, Hopkins Homes
